External Review

External Review Policies: Theatre and Dance

Adopted April 26, 2013

External review Evaluations for Tenure Track Faculty

  • 1-2 assessment(s) from evaluators from universities or professional institutions outside of ASU. The review will evaluate the faculty member's contributions during the past 5-year period
  • Supplemental materials to be included; curriculum vita and/or resume, departmental promotion and tenure guidelines and self-selected supporting documentation.
  • External peer evaluators will be selected by the DPC from 3 names submitted by the candidate with 3 additional names submitted by the department chair.
  • Evaluators should be from a peer, or aspirational peer university or recognized comparable professional institution.
  • The chair writes the reviewer(s) to determine if they are willing to provide an objective written evaluation for tenure and promotion to Associate Professor by reviewing (the items listed above). It will be suggested to the evaluator that the evaluation should be understandable to those outside of the specific discipline, ie, college or university level evaluation.
  • If the review is to be based on creative activity only, the chair will ask for examination of the faculty member's record of creative activity at the university and elsewhere. Reviewers should provide a written assessment of the quality of the faculty member's work and of their potential for continuing creative development.
  • The written evaluation will be 2 pages or less and addresses the following questions:
  • Does the faculty member show a clear understanding and command of advanced knowledge and skills?
  • Have the faculty member's creative achievements established for them a regional, national and/or international reputation, or are they likely to do so?
  • How does the faculty member's work and production record compare to faculty in similar circumstances?
  • What is the faculty member's potential for continued development in their field?

The materials to be externally reviewed will be a subset of the full dossier and will include:

  • Tenure and promotion criteria
  • Curriculum vita and/or resume
  • Creative activity/research documentation and/or narrative and/or
    examples of creative work
  • Teaching philosophy
  • Narrative on service contributions
  • Narrative on teaching contributions
