Butoh Residency with Paul Ibey
The Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance, with support from the Office of Arts and Cultural Programs, and the College of Fine and applied Arts will host international Butoh artist Paul Ibey for a week long residency, November 5th - 9th.
The residency will culminate with a unique opportunity to experience an evening-length performance of Ibey's original Butoh choreography, Korrat, on Saturday, November 10th at 7:30 PM in the Valborg Theatre. Get more information about this Butoh performance. Or read more at the bottom of this page.
Butoh is an avant-garde dance theatre form that originated in Japan in the 1960’s. Butoh, or Dance of Darkness, is one of the major developments in contemporary dance. It has revolutionized the way people view what dance is or can be by creating new forms of movement and expression. Its powerful imagery takes its strength from interior movement: the body twists, contracts, extends. Softness, violence, slowness, sensuality and immobility are all part of butoh. The butoh dancer attempts to bare his inner soul to reveal both the suffering and joy of life.
During the week long residency, Ibey will teach classes in butoh and ballet. The classes are open to the ASU community.
Ibey will also hold an audition and rehearsals throughout the week to set his choreographic work, Le Martyre on a group of Theatre & Dance students. The work will be performed as part of the Fall Appalachian Dance Ensemble concert, November 14th - 17th at 7:30 PM in the Valborg Theatre. Le Martyre is a butoh-based dance work, inspired by the life of dancer/actress Ida Rubinstein, and more specifically, the theme of spirituality that runs through her work. Le Martyre is not a biographical work, nor a reconstruction of Rubinstein's art, but seeks to evoke the essence of the artist, as well as using her spiritual journey—both interior and exterior—as an allegory that speaks to all. Violence, sensuality, eroticism, stillness, death, and transfiguration are all part of this journey.
Korrat, a duet performed by Paul Ibey and Blowing Rock based dancer, G. Alex Smith, is accompanied by the voices of Bulgarian women singing ancient songs of renewal and regrowth as passed down by generations. These primal sounds inject a strong female energy into the dance, which explore themes of fertility, and the life cycle of birth/life/death/rebirth as evidenced not only in the natural world, but also within each of our individual human experiences. Korrat speaks to everyone as an affirmation of us as a people, and also our efforts to respect and honor the natural world around us amidst so much reliance on technology and as we move into another hopeful cycle.
Elements of the performance honor the creative perfection of the earth--the smells, the sounds of the earth and so many others that should be embraced and revered but have instead been raped. Ibey draws on the ancient culture of his Irish heritage that holds belief in the goddess, as opposed to god being a man, and respect for the planet, as it was created by Her.
