Phillip McRorie is a North Carolina-based dance educator and artist living in the Charlotte metro area instructing dancers in release-based modern techniques, ballet, and choreographic processes, as well as generating new works as an independent artist and guest choreographer.
Phillip began his dance training under the faculty of Appalachian State University and Western Carolina Youth Ballet/SG Dance Theatre, studying modern dance techniques, movement composition and improvisation, ballet, pointe, and jazz. He also worked with Verge Dance Collective as an emerging dancer and choreographer. Upon graduation from AppState with a BA in Dance Studies and a BS in Recreation Management, Phillip relocated to work with the Asheville Ballet and Terpsicorps Theater of Dance, as well as complete anatomy and bodywork training. While working with these companies, Phillip was able to continue his training in ballet techniques, choreograph and perform in new contemporary works for the Asheville Ballet, and assist with school programs and general operations at Terpsicorps.
After relocating to Charlotte, Phillip began to pursue teaching more fully and accepted instructor roles at various studios (Charlotte/Belmont School of Ballet, Just Dance LKN, Charlotte Cirque and Dance Center) while performing with Caroline Calouche and Co. In these settings, Phillip has trained students of all ages in ballet, modern dance, choreography, conditioning, pointe, and jazz. During his shift to teaching full-time, Phillip completed his MFA in Choreography at Jacksonville University, expanding his knowledge in choreographic practice and research, dance history, and somatic practices. While completing his MFA, Phillip began instructing modern dance and Exploring the Arts courses at Appalachian State University. In addition to these settings, he has guest-taught for dance festivals, arts councils, and high schools in and around the Charlotte area.
Phillip has presented choreography through the Carolina Aerial and Dance Exchange, the Shadows Showcase by Bloom, Loose Leaves Legacy, and the Asheville Ballet, and has been featured in the Carolina Muse Literary and Arts Magazine. Currently, Phillip is acting as a dance educator, completing teacher certifications in the Cecchetti method of ballet, acting as a guest choreographer for different festivals and companies, and curating opportunities for dancers and educators alike in the Charlotte area.
