Assignment of Production Positions

Mainstage Theatre Productions, Dance Concerts, Appalachian Young Peoples Theatre Spring Tour

Production assignments are awarded based upon a variety of criteria including student experience level, complexity of the project, scheduling factors, and workload. Complete job descriptions and details can be found in the Production Team Handbook.

All student applicants must meet the minimum 2.0 GPA requirement for production participation.

Priority for student production assignments:

  • Design/Technology concentration majors
  • Other Theatre majors
  • Theatre minors
  • Other students

Criteria

Student applicants for Design positions should meet the following criteria*:

  • Successful completion of the basic production techniques course in the area (THR 2230, 2235, 2240).
  • Successful completion of THR 2009 The Stage Environment.
  • Successful service as an assistant to a faculty designer in the appropriate area.
  • Junior or Senior standing.
  • *Rare exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Student applicants for Stage Management positions should meet the following criteria*:

  • Successful completion of the basic production techniques course in the area (THR 2250).
  • Successful service as an Assistant Stage Manager on a previous departmental production.
  • *Rare exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Student applicants for these and other advanced assignments (Technical Director, Costume Shop Supervisor, Dramaturg, and Assistant Director) should also obtain approval from an appropriate faculty/staff member in that area.

Student applicants for other production positions will be evaluated based on the requirements of the position and the experience and abilities of the applicant.

Applying for Positions

During the spring semester, students will have the opportunity to apply for available production positions in the following year's season. The Design/Technology faculty and staff will review applications and make recommendations for the positions based on the above criteria and priorities. Input from directors and other faculty members will be solicited before the student assignments are finalized and announced.

Each student will be assigned a faculty or staff mentor or supervisor.

There are no guarantees that a student will be awarded a production position or that the student will be assigned to the project or show of preference.
