Department of Theatre and Dance Scholarships

Unless otherwise designated apply for all department scholarships using the unified Application Form.  Please Note: Students who currently have scholarships that are "renewable" must re-apply each year in order to be considered.

Freshman, rising Sophomores or undesignated by classification

APO SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded by Alpha Psi Omega, the department's theatre honor society, to a deserving member.

BETTY G. DOWLING MEMORIAL THEATRE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP    

The scholarship is renewable and awarded to a rising sophomore, junior, or senior who is working toward certification in Theatre Arts.  The scholarship requires an overall grade point average of 3.0 and an average of 3.25 in the major and participation in at least one co-curricular production each semester.   

ED AND PAT PILKINGTON SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEATRE PERFORMANCE

Purpose:  To provide support to freshmen or transfer students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre with a concentration in Performance.  Preference shall be given to student veterans.  Recipients must be in good academic standing.  Selection will be made through an audition process.  Awards may be renewable for up to four years if the recipient continues to meet the donor preferences.  Administration related to this endowment is the responsibility of the Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts in coordination with the Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.

ENTROPY DANCE SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded annually to one or two students who are participants in the Entropy Dance Crew, a student organization with the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Criteria For Recipients:

  • The recipient must be a current club member in good standing, but does not have to be a dance major or minor.
  • There is not a minimum GPA requirement beyond the 2.5 required for club membership.
  • Financial need will be taken into consideration, but it will not be the sole determining factor.

MOMENTUM DANCE SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded annually to a student who is a member of the Momentum Dance Club, a student organization with the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Criteria For Recipients:

  • The recipient must be a current club member in good standing, but does not have to be a dance major or minor.
  • There is not a minimum GPA requirement beyond the 2.5 required for club membership.
  • Financial need will be taken into consideration, but it will not be the sole determining factor.

THEATRE FACULTY SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is awarded to a rising sophomore with a minimum 3.0 grade point average, a strong record of theatre and/or dance participation, and who plans to major in theatre.

MAXINE COOPER MCCALL SCHOLARSHIP

To provide scholarship support of $1,000.00 annually to three students who are intending to become future educators who are either (1) majoring in a course of study in the Department of Theatre and Dance within the College of Fine and Applied Arts; or (2) majoring in any course of study.  It is the Donor's preference that the three recipients be intending to teach in three different K- 12 grade spans (Kindergarten to 5th grade, 6th grade to 8th grade and 9th grade to 12th grade).  However, awards may be made to students intending to teach in the same grade span if qualifying applicants are only intending to teach in.one or two of the grade spans.  Preference in the selection of recipients shall accrue to students who intend to become educators of Kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) students.  Awards may be renewable if funding is available.  If there are no students who meet the above donor preferences, awards may be made to students minoring in Theatre.

Rising Junior and Seniors

CHRISTINA EARLY MEMORIAL THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior who is majoring in theatre and has been an outstanding participant in the design, technical or stage management areas. The scholarship requires an overall grade point average of 3.0.

CRATIS WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is awarded for two semesters and is open to rising junior and senior theatre majors who have an overall grade point average of  2.6 and an average of 3.0 in the major.  Active participation in co-curricular theatre productions required.

DAVID H. MATTHEWS SCHOLARSHIP FOR THEATRE & DANCE

The scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior majoring in theatre, who is a full time student maintaining a 3.0 grade point average.  The scholarship is renewable upon satisfactory evidence of academic achievement

SUSAN S. COLE, ALPHA PSI OMEGA THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is open to rising junior and senior theatre majors, and requires an overall grade point average of 3.0 and an average of 3.25 in the major and membership in Alpha Psi Omega (honorary dramatic society).

THE DAVID THOMAS AND MICHAEL HIDALGO THEATRE ARTS SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is awarded to a rising junior or senior declared theatre major with a strong emphasis in Arts Management or Theatre Directing and who remains in good academic standing with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

THE GWEN EDWARDS SCHOLARSHIP FOR DRAMATIC  WRITING: 

This scholarship is awarded to a rising Junior or Senior showing writing promise as evidenced in written artifacts that have been produced in one or more of the following categories: playwriting, arts management, theatre or dance history, dramaturgy. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and must have produced the artifacts for assignments or projects in their (Theatre & Dance) Major (Minors may also be considered), during their academic career at ASU.

Rising Seniors

JENNY E. WALTON MEMORIAL THEATRE AWARD

The scholarship is awarded to a rising senior (minimum of 90 semester hours) with the highest overall grade point average of those eligible at the end of the junior year.  The scholarship requires a declared major in Theatre Arts and a minimum of two years in residence at Appalachian State University. (The award will be determined after spring semester grades are recorded.)
