Diyé (pronounced dee-yay): A word from the language of the Susu people of Guinea, West Africa meaning “humility,” or “the act of being humble."
WHAT IS DIYÉ?
Diyé African Dance and Drum Ensemble is a new diversity/community outreach program of the Appalachian State University Department of Theatre and Dance and the College of Fine and Applied Arts. Directed by Sherone Price and Baba Khalid Saleem, the Ensemble is open to University students and Boone community members.
WHAT DOES DIYÉ DO?
Diyé celebrates the African diaspora by leading African drumming and dance workshops, performances, lecture/demonstrations, and other events throughout the region. They also do team-building workshops through drumming and dance for campus and local organizations. Diyé was established in August 2019.
WHY WAS DIYÉ FORMED?
The MISSION of the Diyé African Dance and Drum Ensemble of the Department of Theatre and Dance is to:
- Educate students and communities on the African diaspora through music, dance, and culture
- Serve as an inclusive ambassador for the African arts on the campus of Appalachian State University and in the larger community
- Act as a conduit for greater connection between Appalachian State University and the surrounding region
- Support the interdisciplinary study of African arts at Appalachian State University
- Contribute to diversity and global learning initiatives at Appalachian State University
