Independent vs. Individual Study

How do these differ from each other?

Independent Study

Study of subjects not listed in the catalog may be undertaken with the permission of the instructor. The course of study and reading list should be worked out and put in writing preceding the proposed study and submitted for approval. A permission slip is used for registration and must be approved by the Chairperson and the Dean.

Individual Study

Under certain circumstances a student may take listed catalog courses on an individual study basis during a semester in which the course is not offered. Students should not assume that a given course can be taken on this basis. Such courses may only be taken with the advance consent of the instructor. A permission form is used for registration and must be approved by the Chairperson and the Dean.
